I found a promising cataract. And then I found the place—a living waterfall, crossed with wet logs from the lingering morning drizzle. I was nearly lying flat to make the photograph, shooting beneath branches that at first obscured my view. I had come to this pond to spend several days wandering some of Baxter’s quieter, less-traveled ground. With the sun just below the horizon, the shorter blue wavelengths scatter more easily through the atmosphere, while the warmer reds and yellows are absorbed by ozone and fine particles, leaving the sky with its deep, quiet blue.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThis is one of my favorite times to be out—too early for most, hushed and undisturbed. I had been so focused on the submerged boulders and the play of light that color had become an afterthought. But no longer.
